Energized to stand with neighbors and advocates on the steps of City Hall today as we move closer to reclaiming the right to community ownership in NYC. A heartfelt thank you to Council Members Sandy Nurse and Crystal Hudson for supporting COPA and for championing the abolishment of the NYC tax lien sale—a policy that has harmed so many Black, brown, and working-class homeowners. Grateful to our coalition partners, including East New York CLT, UHAB and Chhaya Community Development Corporation for standing with Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Together, we’re building momentum for just alternatives that keep families in their homes and preserve generational wealth. Now is the time to give our communities the tools to shape their futures and protect affordable housing. Let’s keep pushing for real, lasting change! #CommunityOwnership #YAH #UHAB #AbolishTheTaxLienSale #NYCHousing #CLT #HousingJustice #NeighborsHelpingNeighbors

Fifth Avenue Committee is excited to announce that our affiliate Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) has been named as one of 20 nonprofit finalists for the 2026 Brooklyn Org Spark Prize. As a finalist, NHN is eligible to receive a $5,000 matching grant for the #BrooklynGives Giving Tuesday campaign. This means that every dollar you give to NHN through the campaign will be matched by Brooklyn Org! The Spark Prize is named for Brooklyn Org’s mission to spark lasting social change in Brooklyn. The Prize recognizes organizations with a deep history of service to Brooklyn, a clear commitment to equity and racial justice, and a bold, community-driven vision for the future. This year, Giving Tuesday is on December 2nd. Powered by Brooklyn Org, #BrooklynGives is the first and only boroughwide giving campaign that drives support to nonprofit organizations and encourages local residents to donate to their community organizations. Now through December 31st, donors have more time to give to their local communities. Join Neighbors Helping Neighbors’ Giving Tuesday campaign by visiting our #BrooklynGives page to donate. Donations will support our work to empower low- and moderate-income New Yorkers to fight for, secure, and maintain quality housing and build financial assets by providing education and counseling for tenants and homeowners, and support for tenant organizing and advocacy for housing justice. "The Heartbeat of Gowanus" Teaching Artists: Kristy McCarthy & Yolande Delius Location: 182 4th Avenue, Brooklyn NY 11217 Created in Collaboration with Fifth Avenue Committee Created by Lead Artists Kristy McCarthy and Yolande Delius, along with 13 Groundswell youth artists, this mural honors the legacy and ongoing efforts of local community organizers who have shaped Gowanus through advocacy, resilience, and unity. The Heartbeat of Gowanus celebrates the spirit of women-led and BIPOC-led activist movements that have long championed afforable and public housing, environmental justice, and social equity in the neighborhood. Participants of the Voices Her'd program conducted in-depth research, community interviews, and co-design workshops with local leaders and residents, which enabled them to develop their creative expression and civic leadership skills. Drawing from local archives, protest imagery, and stories shared by long-time Gowanus residents, the mural captures the strength and resilience of the Gowanus community while envisioning a future rooted in equity and sustainability. Thank you to everyone who joined us last week to celebrate the unveiling of our new mural with Fifth Avenue Committee! We're always grateful for our community coming together to celebrate the amazing hard work our artists do. 📸: Owen Madigan #groundswell #fifthavenuecommittee #gowanus #gowanusbrooklyn #community #unveiling #muralunveiling #communitysupport #communitylove #gowanuscommunity #murals #sli #summer #summerprograms #muralists #dogood #socialimpact #artforchange #artforgood
