Extraordinary visit today with John Winkler, John Vassberg, and Jessica Aftosmis at JetZero HQ. It's clear that the future of the airline industry is much more than just the traditional tube-and-wing design. JetZero is creating our new reality for air travel with blended wing body, and I was lucky enough to see it today. Imagine if you could fly on an airplane that: - has a range of 5000 nautical miles - with a 40 percent smaller engine - that consumes half the fuel (saving money and emissions) - that can carry more people - with much more comfort (more room for seating + never check your carry-on) - while being able to get on and off the plane without long queues - and on top of it all, much quieter to boot JetZero's Demonstrator is on track for its first flight in 2027; they just announced plans in June for a $4.7B production factory in North Carolina. They were founded in 2021. Speed is a shared value between Flexcompute and JetZero, which makes our partnership a natural fit. Did you see we published a new Flow360 validation study that simulates underwater flow around the DARPA Model 4740 Submarine? This new validation study showcases Flow360's ability to accurately model incompressible flows, which is critical for simulating liquid environments. The DARPA Suboff model is a widely accepted standard for submarine validation cases and has been extensively used in academic and industrial CFD research. Starting from a 25 million node mesh, we conducted a mesh refinement study by refining the surface mesh and inserting multiple refinement zones, resulting in a 35 million node mesh. Five different freestream velocities were modeled, ranging from 5.93 to 17.79 knots and solved using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and the Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) hybrid turbulence model. DDES results yielded an error of less than 1.5%. If you want to see a summary of the validation study, check out the slides attached.
