I'm very proud of the work we at PlaceWorks have done in Glendora - most recently the adoption of citywide Objective Design Standards. We have had a wonderfully hands-on collaborative client in Hans Friedel, AICP. Congratulations and thank you to the Glendora staff and our PlaceWorks team of David Christie, AICP, Erina Shimanuki, Chad So and Andrew Davidov, MUP MPA.
Last week, after a three year process, the Glendora City Council unanimously adopted California’s first (prove me wrong) comprehensive Objective Design Standards (ODS) covering all development types — not just multifamily or mixed-use, but commercial, industrial, and single-family as well. This is a big milestone for our community and for cities statewide navigating the evolving landscape of housing, CEQA, economic development incentives, and streamlined approvals. For Glendora, it means clearer expectations, stronger design outcomes, greater predictability for applicants, and a more efficient review process for staff and the public. I’m proud to have managed this effort and to work alongside an exceptional team — Alan Loomis and the #PlaceWorks crew — who brought thoughtfulness, creativity, and technical depth to every workshop, draft, and diagram and lots of dedicated City staff and officials. It’s a privilege to help shape a tool that will guide Glendora’s growth for years to come.

Last week the PlaceWorks Santa Ana office hosted APA Orange Section's Annual Planner Showcase, where our guests shared many convivial conversations over food, drinks, and engaging presentations. Despite an uncharacteristically stormy night, the event was well attended by a number of young and emerging planners. PlaceWorks Associate Principal Suzanne Schwab led the showcase alongside Brian Wolfe from Fehr & Peers. Suzanne presented on the Village at Santa Ana Specific Plan project, a recently adopted plan on the South Bristol Corridor in the City of Santa Ana. After the presentations, Jenny Yu, AICP (Associate and Vice Director of Professional Development with OC APA) led a tour of the PlaceWorks office and highlighted the diversity of our planning and design work. #TeamPlaceWorks #OCAPA #PlannerShowcase #UrbanPlanning

This year marks PlaceWorks’ 50th anniversary, and this past weekend we gathered to celebrate this milestone in sunny Marina del Rey. Our staff traveled from throughout the state and beyond for this momentous occasion, where we got the chance to connect with old faces and new. We played a few rounds of highly competitive bingo, followed by drinks, dinner, and a whole lot of dancing. A few of us even made it out for sunrise yoga at the beach the next morning. Cheers to 50 years of creating great places! We can’t wait to see what the next 50 years hold. #TeamPlaceWorks #50Years #MarinadelRey
