In Malaysia, many smallholder farmers using sustainable “carbon farming” methods often face difficulties in proving the real impact of their work to global buyers. Our next selected team identified a missed economic opportunity within India’s massive textile industry, and are aiming to unlock its hidden value. 💡 💧 UNDP in India x KarbonLedger | Turning Waste into Worth 🪙 Wastewater treatment plants in the country's textile sector often struggle to survive financially, leading to environmental violations. That's why this team is designing a system to change this. Using blockchain technology, they can transparently track pollution data and link emission reductions directly to carbon credits. 🌟 You met our first accelerator team from UNDP Tanzania, who are working with Thallo to ensure the country's carbon credits are both accountable and equitable. Now, meet their second powerhouse collaboration, which is bringing transparency straight to the power outlet. 💡 UNDP Tanzania 𝐱 Grinplus | 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐬 ⚡️ Energy theft and opaque billing are major barriers to a reliable and equitable power grid in the country. And to combat this, UNDP Tanzania and the innovative energy solutions provider Grinplus are currently prototyping a blockchain platform that pairs smart meters with tamper-proof digital certificates. 🔒 Their goal is to ensure that every kilowatt produced and consumed is transparently tracked and fairly billed, creating a trusted and accountable energy system. 🌍 Whether it's carbon credits or kilowatts, this is another powerful example of how a single principle (accountability) can open up all sorts of ways to a sustainable future. A central national registry that’s often out of date and politically influenced – this is the frustrating reality that slows down critical aid in Malawi. We can't fix such a broken system overnight. But we can start by building a better, more trustworthy component to replace the most fractured part. 🧱 Our next team in Cohort 1 of the #SDGBlockchainAccelerator is currently creating that very roadmap, incorporating a pragmatic and powerful approach. 🗺️ 🌀 Instead of trying to overhaul the national beneficiary registry, UNDP Malawi and ClimateAid by GeniusTags are co-designing a model to first solve the data crisis. They are currently configuring their Genius Chain tool to find duplicate records across different NGO lists using secure anonymous hashes, all while working offline. This foundational work on data integrity is what unlocks the future vision for a solution that enables anticipatory action.
