Every strong community has a story of people showing up for one another. United Way has partnered with the labor movement since the 1940s, starting with Henry Ford and auto workers during World War II. By 1972, labor liaisons like Heather McKenzie of United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County were building bridges between local unions and United Way, ensuring workers and their families had support while giving back to the communities they called home. Today, that spirit lives on through the AFL-CIO, an umbrella federation of 64 unions representing 15 million workers and advancing social and economic justice.
