About the Role: The Excess Casualty Underwriter will be responsible for developing and maintaining a profitable portfolio of excess casualty business by collaborating with wholesale agents, determining appropriate pricing and coverage terms, and ensuring strict adherence to underwriting standards. This role requires over five years of excess casualty underwriting experience, exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to build and nurture client relationships while staying updated on industry trends.
Responsibilities:
Underwrite lead and excess liability business in accordance with company processes, procedures, philosophy, and appetite.
Evaluate individual risk characteristics to determine capacity, attachment points, terms, and pricing.
Maintain and enhance existing wholesale broker relationships and develop new ones both regionally and outside the territory.
Adapt underwriting techniques to guidelines and rating plans to accommodate a range of account sizes and operations.
Develop and execute marketing plans aimed at retaining existing business and generating new opportunities.
Collaborate and cross-sell with other lines of business within the organization.
Assess appropriate pricing and coverage terms for submissions.
Monitor and evaluate the performance of underwritten policies.
Support the achievement of production, marketing, and profitability targets.
Stay updated on industry trends, competitor activities, and claims data impacting risk assessment.
Conduct thorough risk assessments ensuring adherence to underwriting standards.
Mentor and train junior underwriters within the team.
Coordinate and prepare materials for client presentations and meetings.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal guidelines.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.
Assist in the development and refinement of underwriting policies and procedures.
Provide technical support and guidance to the underwriting team.
Analyze and report on underwriting performance metrics and trends.
Qualifications:
Established relationships with regional wholesale brokers and the ability to move business is a plus.
5+ years of excess casualty underwriting experience.
Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong analytical and organizational skills.
CPCU designation license preferred.
Comprehensive understanding of excess casualty underwriting coverages.
Proven ability to analyze data and make informed risk decisions.
Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and meet deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building and maintaining business relationships.
Familiarity with industry trends and regulatory requirements.
Proficient in underwriting software and tools.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
