On Aldabra, an estimated 500 tons of plastic lie scattered over 50 km of coastline, carried by ocean currents from afar. Instead than sending this legacy waste to landfills, Plastic Odyssey explored ways to give it a second life. During the expedition’s Indian Ocean stopovers, partners stepped up: Ocean Sole in Kenya can turn flip-flops into useful objects, while Brikole in the Seychelles can recycle rigid plastics. On board, the team even crafted a bench and chairs from Aldabra’s collected plastic, a symbolic first step showing this waste can become a resource. But lasting protection goes beyond cleanup. Stopping plastic at its source is essential. Preventing new waste from reaching Aldabra requires collective action: rethinking consumption and reducing single-use plastics. 🇫🇷 During our last stopover, we welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron aboard Plastic Odyssey, along with Olivier Poivre d'Arvor, France’s Ambassador for the Poles and Maritime Issues, and Valérie VERDIER, CEO of IRD (French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development). After more than three years sailing around the world, and ten years since the idea that became Plastic Odyssey first emerged, this visit marks a powerful moment of official recognition for the work of our entire team, who act every day on the frontlines of the fight against plastic pollution. We had the opportunity to talk about our current and upcoming actions: 🫙Reducing plastic at the source From our global discoveries, we share proven solutions to reduce plastic consumption and production at scale, highlighting our French champions like InovaYa, Castalie, or auum. 🎒 Engaging the next generation Thousands of students have visited the ship and joined our learning programs to understand why and how to reduce the use of plastic. 🔬 Advancing scientific research We are working with IRD on research programs to better understand the impacts of plastic pollution in natural and protected environments. 🏝️ Restoring remote protected islands A growing priority of our mission: cleaning and restoring uninhabited islands essential for biodiversity yet overwhelmed by plastic waste. With UNESCO, we are preparing large-scale efforts to protect these pristine sites worldwide. A rare visit from a President also allowed us to discuss the ongoing negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty. One key idea emerged: a Mediterranean treaty, more operational and less hindered by geopolitical deadlocks. This moment also underscored a final, essential point: to keep advancing missions like ours, and many others working on the frontlines, we need to secure stronger financial support and identify new levers to sustain field action. 🌍 The Odyssey is just beginning. And we’re actively looking for the partners and resources that will allow us to scale our actions. Aldabra: tackling one of the world’s most challenging cleanups. 🌍 After the Henderson expedition, Plastic Odyssey turned its attention to other UNESCO World Heritage Sites facing plastic pollution. Aldabra quickly stood out: hundreds of tons of waste scattered in tiny fragments along 50 km of rugged coastline. With the Seychelles Islands Foundation, the team mapped the entire shoreline, measured and weighed representative samples, and tested extraction methods on this difficult terrain made of sharp coral rock and powerful currents. This new episode shows the first steps of an ambitious effort to remove the plastic already here, and to develop solutions that go beyond landfilling. Aldabra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Indian Ocean, is home to extraordinary biodiversity but also to large amounts of plastic waste carried by ocean currents. Flip-flops, fishing buoys and nets, bottle caps, jerrycans and fragments of degraded plastic accumulate year after year on its shores. On this uninhabited atoll, every piece of waste comes from the sea, travelling long distances before washing ashore. This new episode in our series reveals the scale of the pollution affecting one of the world’s most isolated natural sanctuaries and highlights the urgent need to stop plastic at its source. Aldabra, last refuge for the world’s largest population of giant tortoises. 🐢 After three years sailing around the world, the Plastic Odyssey expedition reached one of the most remote places on Earth: Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Indian Ocean. A sanctuary for thousands of giant tortoises and countless endemic species, Aldabra remains one of the last places where nature still thrives untouched. This first episode in our series offers a glimpse into the beauty, resilience, and fragility of this unique ecosystem. UNESCO and Plastic Odyssey are partnering to combat plastic pollution in marine World Heritage sites through science-driven action, innovation and community-based solutions. 🇲🇺🏝️ First observations after two days of cleanup in Saint Brandon! After just two days of work on the northern part of Coco Island, 3.6 tons of waste have already been collected by our team of nine, camping on-site to speed up the process. The waste is sorted into rigid plastics and mixed materials. Most of it has been there for years; as soon as we touch it, it crumbles and breaks into thousands of pieces, degraded by UV exposure. We expected to find less… Amid bird colonies and stunning beaches, the reality is striking. We can see just how deeply plastic pollution has reached even these isolated environments, seemingly untouched by human activity. The collected waste is currently stored on the ship’s deck, awaiting treatment. The cleanup goes on. This mission is made possible with the support of Odysseo Foundation, Saint Brandon Conservation Trust, and The Raphaël Fishing Co. Ltd. 📸 Photo credit © Marine Reveilhac #SaintBrandon #Mauritius #TheImpossibleCleanup #IndianOcean #PlasticPollution

🇲🇺🏝️ New cleanup mission in the Saint Brandon archipelago! Located 430 km northeast of Mauritius, Saint Brandon is a unique marine sanctuary, home to green turtles, sooty terns, and coral reefs among the best preserved in the Indian Ocean. The Plastic Odyssey team has just landed on the archipelago for a few days, to remove plastic waste washed up on the beach of Coco Island, using methodologies tested on Henderson Island (South Pacific) and Aldabra Atoll (Indian Ocean). This mission is made possible through the dedicated efforts of Odysseo Foundation, Saint Brandon Conservation Trust and The Raphaël Fishing Co. Ltd. #SaintBrandon #Mauritius #TheImpossibleCleanup #IndianOcean #PlasticPollution

🌊 #UNESCO - Simon BERNARD - Mission 1 OCEAN - UNESCO Ocean
