  • ICYMI: Toyota Motor Corporation's bZ made a cameo in Superman this year. Lois Lane rolling up to the Hall of Justice in the 2026 bZ might seem like a small detail, but for fans like us, it's a fun crossover of two worlds. Comic book universes have always served as testing grounds for technologies that seemed impossible until they weren't, from personal communication devices to renewable energy systems. And seeing Toyota technology integrated naturally into mainstream entertainment reflects how mobility innovation moves from concept to cultural acceptance.

  • Nicole LeBlanc made a point today about corporate coordination in climate-tech that deserves more attention. We see similar opportunities across mobility and sustainability sectors. Technologies that can become category-defining standards have the potential to accelerate adoption timelines significantly. The coordination Nicole described transforms individual pilot projects into industry-wide infrastructure shifts.

🌳 Climate-tech scales faster when corporates back the same horse. Too often, progress slows down because corporates tackle climate solutions independently, each backing their own preferred startup. The result: every new solution gets stuck navigating the same complicated integrations from scratch, wasting valuable time. This challenge of slowed progress goes beyond fragmented investments. Many existing infrastructure systems and subsidies were designed decades ago, unintentionally creating hurdles that make adopting new solutions harder. WeaveGrid is a strong example of what happens when corporates get aligned. Multiple automotive OEMs chose explicitly to back WeaveGrid as their category leader, making grid flexibility integrations easier and faster. At Woven Capital, we’re intentional about this approach. Rather than investing in isolated solutions, we actively help corporates align behind startups that can lead their category, creating clear pathways for innovation to scale quickly. When we all back the same horse, we turn promising climate-tech ideas into real-world infrastructure and fragmented efforts become meaningful progress.

Sometimes, the only way to truly understand a problem is to go and see it for yourself. Toyota Motor Corporation’s latest post on Genchi Genbutsu captures something essential about how we approach investment decisions. By visiting the actual place where work happens, we observe the process, confirm the facts, and analyze root causes firsthand. This principle shapes how we partner with startups. We go beyond pitch decks and financial models by visiting factories, testing prototypes, and spending time with customers to understand what founders are building. Whether we're walking through a new manufacturing facility or testing applications in the field, staying curious and finding root causes when issues arise leads to better investment decisions. The best entrepreneurs practice Genchi Genbutsu instinctively.

Future of Mobility, Energy, and Sustainable Cities

Europe's deep tech and climate startups excel at something important: reaching real academic depth. I've spent considerable time across European innovation hubs, and what strikes me consistently is how closely these companies remain tied to university labs. You'll find entire founding teams with PhD-level expertise, tackling problems from fundamental scientific principles rather than surface-level solutions. This academic foundation creates genuinely sophisticated, IP-heavy technologies. These companies build from decades of research, with ongoing collaboration that keeps pushing technical boundaries. But there's a scalability challenge here. Academic orientation sometimes means startups try solving every related problem simultaneously. The depth that makes their technology remarkable can also slow practical deployment. This is exactly where corporate engagement becomes crucial. At Woven Capital, Toyota's Growth Fund we see our role as helping guide that deep research toward commercially scalable applications. Early corporate involvement provides the focus needed to turn academic excellence into market impact. Europe's regulatory environment amplifies this opportunity. When big companies like Toyota face real penalties tied to sustainability targets like recycled content in vehicles, innovative solutions become urgent necessities, not nice-to-haves. European regulations effectively reduce green premiums by creating genuine cost consequences for inaction. The combination of academic rigor, sophisticated technology, and regulatory pressure creates competitive advantages that extend well beyond Europe's borders. Corporate partners who engage early can help ensure that academic excellence translates into scalable impact. #CVC #Toyota #WovenCapital #VC #Commercialisation #Europe #EU #UK #startups #partnerships

Future of Mobility, Energy, and Sustainable Cities

When startups and corporates speak different languages, our job as a CVC is translation 🌐. People often assume the cautious pace from big corporates is overly conservative or slow, but Toyota Motor Corporation's deliberate approach is intentional and essential. Building physical products like cars means mistakes aren’t theoretical; they carry real-world safety and regulatory consequences. I saw this contrast firsthand with past #startups I've worked with, where most embraced a “move fast and break things” philosophy. That ethos might work perfectly in software, but it can’t apply when you’re dealing with regulated environments or physical infrastructure. You can’t afford to “break things” when building cars or buildings. At Woven Capital, Toyota's Growth Fund, we intentionally structured our team around this precise challenge: 💡Our Investment Team consists entirely of professionals from financial and venture capital backgrounds who understand the startup mindset and can provide disciplined financial guidance. 🛠️Our Portfolio Success Team specifically helps startups navigate Toyota’s internal processes and business units. Their name reflects their objective - to ensure the portfolio is successful. This translation role benefits both sides. Toyota gains valuable insights into emerging markets and new technologies, and startups gain guided entry into one of the world’s most complex industrial ecosystems. Woven Capital deploys capital in a way that translates expectations, aligns strategic priorities, and creates trust. Speaking the same language is why our portfolio companies can actually scale with Toyota. #WovenCapital #Toyota #VC #CVC

Startups often arrive with the right product, the right team, and a clear use case, but navigating a global organization like Toyota Motor Corporation is a challenge of its own. Success depends not just on technical fit, but on aligning with internal priorities and building trust across functions. At Woven Capital, we support our portfolio companies in identifying the right partners within Toyota’s business units, whether in engineering, procurement, manufacturing, or regional operations. We help clarify who needs to be involved, how decisions get made, and what it takes to move from early interest to real collaboration. It’s detailed work, often invisible from the outside, but essential to bridging the gap between early-stage innovation and enterprise-scale adoption. This is where strategic capital creates real leverage: not just by funding new ideas, but by helping them take root inside the systems they aim to improve.

Future of Mobility, Energy, and Sustainable Cities

We’re backed by Toyota Motor Corporation, but we’re not your mother’s CVC. When people hear "corporate venture capital," they often picture something slow, bureaucratic, and narrowly focused - especially when the corporate behind it is globally recognized for automotive manufacturing. I spend a lot of time clarifying what Woven Capital, Toyota's Growth Fund actually is, and how we operate differently: ✅ Yes, we’re Toyota’s growth-stage fund, but our entire investment team comes from the private sector, so we bring fresh market insights and can be genuine value-add partners to our corporate colleagues. ✅ Yes, our IC meets regularly to assess investments, but we do it monthly, enabling us to move quickly, remain flexible, and respond to global market opportunities. ✅ Yes, we’re associated with a car company, but our investment scope goes far beyond traditional mobility: we actively invest in #energy, industrial #decarbonization, and #spacetech, just to name a few. Corporate venture capital doesn’t have to move slowly or think narrowly. At Woven Capital, we’re proof that it can be fast, ambitious, and genuinely global. #CVC #WovenCapital #Toyota
